Spring Sump Pump Readiness Checklist

Spring Sump Pump Readiness Checklist

Spring Sump Pump Readiness Checklist

As snow melts and spring rains arrive, your sump pump becomes the first line of defense against basement flooding. Use this checklist to make sure your system is ready before the wet season begins.

Sump Pump Inspection Checklist

Check the power connection
Make sure the sump pump is securely plugged into a working GFCI outlet and that the cord is not damaged.

☐ Inspect the sump pit
Remove any debris, gravel, or sediment that may have accumulated in the pit and could clog the pump intake.

Test the pump operation
Pour a bucket of water into the sump pit. The float should rise and activate the pump, and the water should discharge quickly.

Check the float switch

Ensure the float moves freely and is not obstructed or stuck against the pit wall or pump housing.

Inspect the discharge line
Verify that the discharge pipe outside the house is clear of ice, debris, or blockages so water can flow away from the foundation.

Confirm proper drainage location
Make sure water is being discharged at least several feet away from your home’s foundation.

☐ Inspect the check valve
Ensure the check valve on the discharge pipe is installed correctly and functioning to prevent water from flowing back into the pit.

Test the backup system
If you have a battery backup sump pump, test it and check the battery condition or replace it if needed.

Listen for unusual noises
When the pump runs, listen for grinding or rattling sounds that could indicate wear or impending failure.

Check pump age

Most sump pumps last 7–10 years. If yours is approaching that age, consider replacing it before the heavy spring rains arrive.

Inspect the pump intake screen
Make sure the intake screen is clean and not clogged with dirt or sediment.

Verify alarm systems
If your system has a high-water alarm, test it to ensure it will alert you if the pump fails.

Pro Tip:
Running this quick checklist once in early spring can prevent thousands of dollars in water damage and give you peace of mind during the wettest time of year.
